April is Stress Awareness Month, a time to pause and reflect on the pressures we face in our daily lives, especially in the workplace. With stress contributing to 40% of all work-related illnesses in the UK, according to recent studies, it’s clear that this silent burden is one we can’t afford to ignore.
For businesses, unchecked stress doesn’t just affect individuals, it impacts productivity, engagement, and even staff retention. The good news? There are simple, practical ways to manage it, and they don’t require a complete overhaul of your workday.
At Joyful Living, we’ve spent over a decade helping companies across the UK create healthier, happier workplaces. From on-site massages to tailored wellbeing workshops, we’ve seen firsthand how small changes can make a big difference. Below, we’re sharing five stress-busting techniques your team can use every day. They’re quick, actionable steps that fit seamlessly into even the busiest schedules. Better yet, these strategies are taught in our expert-led Stress Management Workshops and Mindfulness Workshops, designed to empower employees at all levels. Ready to bring a bit of calm to your team? Let’s dive in.
Deep breathing
When stress strikes, it often appears in our bodies first. Tight shoulders, a racing heart, or shallow breathing. One of the simplest ways to hit the reset button is through deep breathing. It’s free, takes just a few minutes, and can be done at your desk.
Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes if you can, or soften your gaze. Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four, feeling your belly expand. Hold for a count of four, then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat this cycle five times. You’ll notice your heart rate slow and your mind starts to clear.
Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps counteract the “fight or flight” response triggered by stress. It’s a quick way to regain control when deadlines loom or emails pile up.
Desk stretches

Hours hunched over a laptop can leave your neck, shoulders, and back screaming for relief. Desk stretches are a brilliant way to ease physical tension, boost circulation, and give your mind a mini-break, all without leaving your chair. Try these techniques:
- Neck Roll: Drop your chin to your chest, then slowly roll your head in a circle, first clockwise, then anticlockwise. Do this for 30 seconds.
- Shoulder Shrug: Lift your shoulders towards your ears as you inhale, hold for a second, then drop them as you exhale. Repeat five times.
- Seated Cat-Cow: Place your hands on your knees. Arch your back and look up as you inhale (cow pose), then round your back and tuck your chin as you exhale (cat pose). Flow between these for five breaths.
Stretching relieves muscle stiffness, which often builds up during long periods of sitting. It also encourages mindfulness by bringing your focus back to your body.
Five-minute mindfulness
Mindfulness doesn’t have to mean meditating for hours in a silent room.
A five-minute break can be enough to quiet a busy mind and recharge your energy, perfect for those moments when stress starts to creep in. Set a timer for five minutes. Find a quiet spot (or pop in some earbuds in an open-plan office). Focus on your breath, noticing the sensation of air moving in and out. If your mind wanders to that looming deadline or unanswered email, gently bring it back to your breathing. No judgement, just observation.
Studies show mindfulness reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, while improving focus and emotional resilience. It’s like a mental declutter, helping you tackle tasks with a clearer head.
A quick walk

Sometimes, the best way to beat stress is to step away, literally. A brisk five- or ten-minute walk can work wonders, whether it’s around the office, outside in the fresh air, or even up and down the stairs. Grab a colleague if you fancy a chat, or go solo with your thoughts. Keep a steady pace, enough to get your blood flowing, but not so fast you’re out of breath.
Notice your surroundings: the sound of your footsteps, the breeze on your face, or the hum of the office printer. Walking boosts endorphins, the body’s natural mood-lifters while giving you a break from screen time. It’s also a chance to process thoughts and return to your desk with renewed energy.
Gratitude
Stress often thrives on negativity, focusing on what’s going wrong rather than what’s going right. A quick gratitude practice can flip that script, lifting your mood in a minute or two.
Pause and think of three things you’re grateful for right now. They don’t have to be big, maybe it’s a supportive colleague, a decent cup of tea, or the fact that it’s nearly Friday. Jot them down if you can, or just hold them in your mind momentarily.
Gratitude rewires your brain to notice the positive, reducing stress and building resilience over time. It’s a small habit with a big payoff, especially in high-pressure environments.
Stress Awareness Month and beyond
Stress Awareness Month is a brilliant opportunity to shine a light on workplace wellbeing, but it’s not a one-and-done event. The techniques we’ve shared here are a starting point, a way to spark conversations and habits that last all year round. Imagine a workplace where employees feel supported, not just in April but every day. That’s the vision we’re working towards at Joyful Living, and we’d love to help your business achieve it.
Why does it matter? Because a happier team is a more productive team. Reducing stress doesn’t just cut sick days (though it does that too, it’s linked to millions of lost working days in the UK annually). It fosters engagement, boosts morale, and helps you attract and retain top talent. In a competitive market, that’s a game-changer.
At Joyful Living, we’re here to make wellbeing simple, effective, and joyful. Whether it’s a one-off Stress Management Workshop to kickstart your efforts or a tailored programme to embed these habits into your culture, we’ve got you covered.
