  • Q. Why It's Important

In the last years Mental Health has come to the attention of the public as a decisive factor in human wellbeing and this has been highlighted especially in the workplace, where the cost of ill mental health affects businesses in terms of human costs and financially in terms of productivity. Mental Health today is finally recognised as important as physical health and at government level companies have been urged to put in place measures to create a supportive culture for employee mental health, putting it at the centre of their policies.

The mental health awareness workshops for managers and employees are one hour long and cover the topics to give a foundation of what mental health is, equipping participants with effective practical techniques to foster greater mental health at work. They can be delivered onsite or online depending on the company’s needs. They can be combined with longer programmes, like the MHFA First Aid Training, designed to train Mental Health First Aiders within the company as a point of contact for individuals in need. The MHFA First Aider would explain in depth various mental health conditions and provide first aiders with the skills to recognise, self-help or signpost to external services.

  • Q. What Are the Benefits

Mental health awareness is key for employees experiencing mental ill health to be able to recognise their symptoms and acquire the resources to either self-care or find external support. These can range from lack of resources to manage stress, to personal issues outside work, to conditions like depression or addictions.

In fact, lack of awareness or stigma around the issue, mean that employees going through mental health crises might not look for help and continue working through them, with high impact on their health, productivity at work and absence rates. At the same time managers who are not aware of mental health conditions would not be able to recognise individuals who are experiencing issues and adequately support them. Promoting wellbeing workshops such as Mental Health awareness in employees and managers would offer practical advice for employees to find the necessary support when in need and for managers to manage their team, helping individuals when they need it and supporting them in going back to work.
